Beyond the VISA Project

In 2025, new U.S. student visa policies reshaped the landscape for thousands of international students. Our research project focuses on how these changes are affecting students in Boston and surrounding areas—not just on paper, but in their day-to-day lives, academic journeys, and future plans. We’re speaking directly with international students—listening to their stories about navigating policy shifts while balancing studies, career ambitions, and life far from home. Our interviews explore:

  1. Awareness & understanding of the policy changes

  2. Academic impact on coursework, campus involvement, and belonging.

  3. Future planning about internships, OPT, job searches, and whether to stay in the U.S. or return home.

  4. Wellbeing & support: students’ feelings of safety, the support they receive from universities, and how prepared institutions are to respond.

International students often face complex challenges—from cultural adjustment to financial strain—and sudden immigration changes can heighten uncertainty and stress. By documenting these experiences, we aim to give colleges, universities, and policymakers a clearer picture of what’s at stake and how to better support this community in uncertain times. Our goal is to amplify the voices of international students and ensure that policy shifts are met with understanding and preparation.
